Year 6: Bewerley Park Trip: Day 2
Day 2:
All groups have taken full advantage of the sunshine today, even if some of them have briefly been immersed in ghyll water.
Miss Blakeley's group enjoyed a walk along the Nidd and then up to Brimham Rocks before an afternoon of rock scrambling. The photo is before they tackled their first rock challenge, during which the wind got up meaning that on their return to the centre everyone really looked like they had had lots of fresh air. The instructors informed the children that the Brimham Rock formation was caused by wind erosion. We don’t think the children were there long enough for that to happen to them!
Several children in Mrs Buttery's group realised that wetsuit wrestling was harder than ghyll scrambling. Getting out of wetsuits with a warm shower and a hot meal beckoning proved a bit easier.
Day 2 Evening:
The children have maintained their energy levels from the daytime activities into the team challenges of the evening. Top quotes from the day so far: 'I wish we could do this at school,' whilst doing the river study. 'My mum won't believe I've done this,' whilst sliding down the Ghyll. Some activities required so much concentration that quotes could not sum up what the children were thinking. The staff have recognised that there has been tremendous encouragement and teamwork that all the children have challenged their personal stretch zones in the beck or on the Leap of Faith. Some children have done this when choosing lunch or walking to or from Brimham Rocks. Mrs Allenby said, 'Phew! I have never walked back from Brimham so fast. We couldn't keep up but it meant we had time for another activity back at the centre.' She also said that her group were using PIE, which is not another food challenge, but is Physical, Inform, Encourage. Expect a full explanation when the children return. Ms Massender has noticed how the boys are learning how to manage their own belongings around their dormitory. This might be a surprise to some. We are expecting a very good night's sleep tonight.
